Bathroom Updates – Pre-Planning is Key

A repeat client in Maple Glen, satisfied with a previous project from Post Remodeling & Handyman Services, was interested in remodeling a powder room in their home. The homeowners ordered all the materials they thought were needed and asked Post Remodeling to review the cabinet dimensions. The room itself was small and the layout was not changing.

The vanity ordered by the homeowner from Home Depot was damaged in transit. After a month, the replacement arrived. After arriving to begin the project, Post Remodeling found the following:

  • Vanity was missing the “toe kick”.
  • New medicine cabinet had a chipped mirror door.
  • Vanity top was sized incorrectly and not usable.
  • No padding ordered for cork floor.
  • No new receptacles or switches provided.

Post Remodeling was able to correct each of the problematic areas. Post provided or fabricated all missing components.

In addition to the extra work required to correct the situation, some prior professional planning and product selection would have yielded a roomier, more functional powder room.

In many cases, Post Remodeling is involved with the overall planning and materials specifications. From previous experience, bathroom and kitchen remodeling projects are notorious for having an incredibly small margin for error and, as a result, require detailed planning in advance.

A Small Bathroom in Radnor Gets Huge Results

A newly remodeled bathroom in Radnor by Post Remodeling & Handyman ServicesA Radnor homeowner who found us via our positive reviews on Angie’s List recently purchased components to replace an old vanity/top/faucet and mirror, ancient medicine cabinet, and worn out lighting fixture.

They aimed to remove the old components, paint the walls & ceiling, and install new fixtures. While the bathroom was small, the new items selected by the homeowner in addition to a bright, fresh wall color really makes the bathroom look tremendous.

As part of the project, an old medicine cabinet was replaced with a custom-made niche which now houses a retractable mirror – a very creative use of space.

Home Energy Monitors – Worth The Cost?

Home Base by EnergyHubImagine the following scenario: You’ve had an energy audit by a certified professional like Post Remodeling & Handyman Services. You’ve invested in your home by implementing the prescribed measures such as air-sealing, insulating, upgrading your heater and hot water heater, replacing old appliances with Energy Star appliances, installing high efficiency lighting, adding advanced ventilation systems, and more.

Congratulations! You are now ready for a home energy monitor (like EnergyHub’s Home Base – pictured) to really dial in and minimize your electrical consumption.

Wait a minute…. you haven’t done those things yet?

Earlier this week, a customer in Blue Bell shared a Wall Street Journal article about off-the-shelf energy monitoring products and asked if they were right for their home.

Don’t be lured by the attraction of the latest smart energy gadget. Your money is better spent on a thorough energy audit. It is the only logical first step towards “greening” your home.

That said, if you have done the rudimentary work and an interesting gadget will motivate you to keep going and drill deeper, maybe it does make sense to invest in an energy monitor.

Repairing a Porch Roof in Bala Cynwyd – For Good!

Completed Bala Cynwyd Roof by Post HandymanIn the Philadelphia area, we experienced over three times the average rainfall during the months of August – November. As a result, Post Handyman & Remodeling Services have been very busy with roof related projects, especially flashings and other leak prone areas. Not only did the weather exploit roof weaknesses, it ran interference with our project schedule as well!

Over time, a small leak can cause much damage. By the time the damage has ruined visible finishes, water infiltration has also ruined important behind-the-scenes building components like sheathing, framing, & insulation.

This project in Bala Cynwyd involved re-roofing a small porch damaged by a long-term leak caused by a combination of poor flashing and a chronically leaking gutter located just above this small roof. The ongoing water infiltration rotted the wood roof deck and ruined the stucco porch ceiling and entry way millwork underneath.

Previous roofers attempted to correct the problem with band-aid solutions – caulk and sealant. This is rarely a long-term solution and creates a greater problem which must be solved further down the road. Post Remodeling proposed the correct solution of removing and replacing the underlayment, shingles, flashings, and rotted sheathing.

Post installed a continuous waterproof underlayment, new shingles, and copper flashing. This approach will provide a final solution with a “belt and suspenders” roofing system.

Post Remodeling take great pride in offering accurate diagnoses and final solutions to the problems homeowners experience. For this reason, it is incredibly easy to stand behind our work.

As a general best practice, consider having a roof inspection every 3-5 years by an experienced Building Analyst such as Post Remodeling & Handyman Services. For greater value, couple this inspection with a gutter cleaning and/or home energy audit for greater value.
